I got the job offer today. :) EEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKK!!!!!!!
I turn in my two weeks tomorrow. I'm freaking out. Do I turn it in tomorrow? I go home next week to see my family, maybe I should go over the contract with my mom first. I don't know how these things work- I've never worked somewhere as a consultant...does anyone know about these things????
OMG OMG OMG OMG
The bosses are taking me to a celebratory dinner Tuesday night. I can't believe it! I have never been taken to a celebratory dinner with whomever I want to invite to be inducted into a new work family. They said bring roommates, friends, anyone I want. ?? This could get expensive. This is so crazy!! The fact that they would go all out for me like this is humbling and amazing. It makes me feel so good- I finally feel like I matter to my boss. :) I am so excited!

Ohhhh. Have you met anyone who used to work for these guys? Or anyone who is familiar with their organization? Have you looked into their Better Business Bureau standing by any chance?
ReplyDeleteThose questions could be way off base. This company may be totally established and well-known and no need to worry. But, well, consultant is different than employee and the big celebration makes me very nervous.
What about that good-looking CEO who took you to his company's Christmas party? Could he look over the contract? Would he know anything about this company?
Don't mean to splash cold water--and I'm not. Really. Your a smart girl and this company may be so solid and well-known that my concern is making you chuckle. I hope so.
Again, the celebratory dinner with a free pass to invite whoever. Like I said, makes me nervous. My cynical old brain is hearing alarm bells. It's probably a false alarm.
Re: being a consultant. Yes, I've been one. Am one. I have never had that title and been required to quit another job, however. A consultant is just that--a consultant with contractual obligations, not an employee.
Per tax purposes, here in PA a consulted is listed as a "private contractor." Frequently around here, small businesses and especially, small non-profits, want to hire a person as a private contractor, but treat them as a full-time employee.
This gives the company a full-time employee with none of the employee benefit or tax costs. It means that they do not have to pay the expected social security and other taxes that they have to pay for employees. However, if you are only able to work for them, you are not a consultant...except on paper.
It may be different there in CA. Most things are. :) That's usually a good thing.
Have the contract checked out and the company, too if needed, before you jump.
If the company is well-known and established, it's probably fine.
